It’s a Good Week if You’re a Hockey Fan

It’s a good week if you’re a hockey fan.  At least for fans of the Boston Bruins and the University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks hockey teams.

Boston figures prominently in all of this.  And Boston is one of those places I’ve been to a few times and hold it high on the list of favorite cities.  It is the hometown of favorite NHL team, the Boston Bruins, and the location of the NCAA national championship hockey tournament, where favorite NCAA D-1 team, the UNO Mavericks will be playing in their first Frozen Four semi-final appearance.

It’s a good week if you’re a hockey fan.

The Bruins are in a dogfight with the Ottawa Senators and the Detroit Red Wings to clinch a spot playing for the Stanley Cup.  In the Atlantic Division of the NHL Eastern conference the Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning have the top two seeds in the division sewn up.  But the third seed and the wild-card are up for grabs. The Red Wings currently hold third seed with 97 points and the Bruins are two points behind, holding the wild card slot over the Senators.  The Senators are keeping this interesting by having 95 points also but Boston has a game in hand over both the Red Wings and Senators. The upshot of all this?  Any two of the three could end up with the third seed and the wild card.  And one of them will be done for the season.

Adding to the excitement is the remaining schedule.  The Bruins play the Washington Capitals, the Florida Panthers and the Tampa Bay Lightning.   The Caps are 2nd in the Metro Division of the Eastern Conference and as noted the Lightning are 2nd in the Atlantic Division.  The Panthers are out of the race as such but however the Red Wings, Bruins and Senators finish out, Florida will be right behind them.  Some serious competition for the Bruins and of special note, former UNO Maverick goaltender Dan Ellis plays for the Panthers.

Not to be outdone by the Bruins, the Sens play the New York Rangers (top of the Metro Division) and the Philadelphia Flyers (right behind the Panthers).  A couple of stiff games there.  The Wings have it a little easier perhaps with a game against league, conference and division leader Montreal but also a game against Carolina Hurricanes, who haven’t had the strongest season.

It’s a good week if you’re a hockey fan.

Not to be outdone by the NHL, the Division 1 NCAA men’s hockey tournament is underway.  The Frozen Four semi-final game is tomorrow (Thursday, April 9) in Boston at 4pm CT.  In their first trip to the Frozen Four, the UNO Mavericks will be playing the Providence College Friars.  It appears to be a relatively evenly matched game.

This is extraordinary news.  As a Mavs fan from the day they stepped on the ice this is really great news.

It’s a good week if you’re a hockey fan.
