Halloween Means One Thing

Tomorrow is Halloween.  Lot’s of history and background.  If you’re interested in that, click here and you’ll find all manner of interesting articles and whatnot.  Some might even be true.  Better yet, some might even be accurate.  But that isn’t my thesis today.

My thesis today is what people think about Halloween, particularly people who believe it is some Satanic ritual based thing.

For starters, let’s be very real about what Halloween means to the vast majority of people who live in USAmerica.  It means dressing up in costumes and getting free candy or free booze.  Or both.  That’s it.  That’s all there is to it.  There is no devil worship.  There are no ritual sacrifices.  It is about trick or treating, though even that phrasing doesn’t have any meaning for most people.  It would be more honest if we just said “Give me some candy out of the bowl, please”  because most folks aren’t doing any tricks if there aren’t any treats.  They’ll just go to the next house because doing tricks will likely get the police called.

Are their Satanic things going on at Halloween?  Sure.  And likely any other day.  Associating present day Halloween with increased Satanic cult activity still violates the ‘correlation does not equal causation’ rule.  And let’s not say participation equates to agreement.  Let’s face it, there are a lot of folks who claim to be followers of Christ but really aren’t so much.  For that matter, there are people who go to church regularly who don’t follow Christ very closely either. Being a participant in the ‘free candy and/or free booze’ Halloween is a far cry from participating in anything remotely Satanic.  Or pagan, which is not the same thing.

It’s based on a pagan ritual?  Okay, that one I’ll grant.  It really does have its roots in a pagan festival.  If we use that criteria to quash Halloween then guess what other minor festivals we have to quash.  Yep, Christmas (and some others).  If you’re going to bash Halloween on that basis then you better fire up your Christmas basher too.  Let me know how that works out for you.

Have some fun this Halloween.  It’s a fun day/evening.  Wear silly costumes.  Play silly games like bobbing for apples.  Eat candy if you like it.  Drink booze if you want.  (Though moderation of either is probably a good idea and a lack of moderation in combining the two is likely to end in a train wreck).  However you do it, enjoy it!  And please quit making it something it isn’t.  There are enough real problems in the world without making stuff up.
